We know that the northern alliance here lost a lot of territory to the taliban about a year and a half ago there’s great expectation that that of those allegiances might switch again the minute america is involved dan elizabeth palmer in northern afghanistan that’s controlled by the socalled northern alliance which is opposed to the taliban you may want to note while there’s a lot of talk about the united front it is dominated by the minority tribes in afghanistan the tajiks the uzbeks and the hazaris tribes the taliban which controls most of the country and has the dictatorial government that has dominated the taliban which is now under attack uh represents the about 40 percent of the population is pashtun and sometimes called pushtus the questions uh represent about 40 percent and they’re the largest tribe in terms of numbers in afghanistan but that doesn’t mean 40 percent of afghanistan supports the taliban dictatorship which has been called in other quarters quote a kind of fascist islamic organization unquote now we’re awaiting president bush’s address to the nation from the white house we’re still a few moments away from that to bring you up to date uh airstrikes have begun in afghanistan they started something more than an hour ago so far we have seen and heard parts of the attack on kabul the afghan capital uh the belief runs strong that the attacks are underway in various other targets throughout afghanistan although that has not been confirmed as always we’re going to try to keep you very much posted on our news gathering process here we’ll try to tell you what we know try to tell you what we don’t know try to tell you what’s confirmed tell you what’s pretty much confirmed but not absolutely solid and then tell you what is unconfirmed as time goes along we’re in for a long day and the the afghans and particularly the taliban is in for a long night it being night time there now the plan is for the attacks to continue over a long period of time as we’ve said before to be followed by drops of food in certain portions of afghanistan all designed to crumble the taliban from the then or at the very least get them to meet president bush’s conditions as you know the president among the conditions first and foremost to give up osama bin laden secondly to close his terrorist camps thirdly to allow inspection of those camps and then to let go of the hostages uh six to eight hostages sometimes people say six other times say eight those hostages include two americans have been held by the taliban for some time so those are the four conditions that president bush put forward when he said to the taliban the time for negotiation is over these are our conditions now in the last 12 to 24 hours the taliban put out yet another statement saying well we are willing to detain osama bin laden and have him tried in afghanistan under islamic law if the united states requests that president bush uh declined that he refused it virtually out of hand saying look we’re not here to negotiate and the time is running short time is now out because what you see in this live picture from kabul the afghan capital some antiaircraft fire from the ground uh as cruise missiles and b1 and b2 bombers were hitting the afghan capital as well as other targets in afghanistan now the most of the fire you see coming up from the ground going up is that the airport outside of kabul which is the largest airport in the country the second largest would be in jalalabad which is to the south of there uh there’d be some surprise if targets around jalalabad are not already being hit or will be hit soon since jalalabad does have considerable of what the taliban has in the ware air defenses and for that matter aircraft now you may want to note that there are already millions of afghan refugees in camps in iran and pakistan they’ve been flooding out of afghanistan for weeks thousands more reportedly on the move fleeing their homes in anticipation of war we go back to correspondent alan pizzi then it’s gone quiet here earlier on as I said we were hearing planes going over itbut it has gone quiet but something else has come up if you can see over my left shoulder a very bright moon which tells you this is a very clear night we’re about 120 miles from kandahar.
